This project also envelops African consumers into the eighteenth-century world economy, as it emerged from the constraints o f th e early m odem period. Large-scale slave-ship outfitters sourced their trade goods throughout Europe, developing supply chains as far east as Venice and Bohemia. In examining the question o f goods for th e slave trade, this dissertation demonstrates that the transatlantic slave trade broke the bou ndaries o f the Atlantic world. It was also a disastrous dis ease environment for Europeans, meaning that failing to trade quickly on the coast increased the risks o f i llness and loss. The African coast was a segmented marketplace, characterized by a chronic supply shortage o f sl aves and intense international competition for them. The ability of slave-ship outfitters to generate good information about African tastes and preference and successfully deploy slave-trade goods was crucial to their ability to succeed in the slave trade because the African coast leg o f the trade, not the Middle Passage, was the most important, and most dangerous portion of the trade. This dissertation argues that scale economies enabled slave-ship outfitters to meet the demands of their African consumers by enabling them to develop supply chains in Europe and devise creative solutions to attain both stability and flexibility in the AfricanĪtlantic. This dissertation explores the way that different forms of commercial organization as well as different national contexts influenced the way that slave-ship outfitters solved the problem of meeting African consumer demand. But the commercial form and organization of the slave trade changed dramatically in Europe in the period in question, as state-sponsored monopolies gave way to private traders. Throughout the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the slave trade was conducted by non-monetized barter trade in the African Atlantic, where European merchants exchanged a parcel of goods for a package of slaves. It looks at this question of market coordination by studying British and French slave traders in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a period of tremendous growth in the transatlantic slave trade. It asks how European slave-ship outfitters gathered information about consumer demand for their products on the African coast, relayed that information back to Europe, worked with suppliers in Europe to obtain the right trade goods and then deployed those goods in the African Atlantic in order to purchase slaves.
